Estado-Maior-General das Forças Armadas

The General Staff of the Armed Forces (EMGFA) is a structure of the Armed Forces and is part of the direct administration of the State, through the Ministry of National Defence (MDN). The EMGFA is the headquarters of the Armed Forces, comprising all the structures and capabilities required to support the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces (CEMGFA) in the exercise of his powers, and is endowed with administrative autonomy. As a general mission, the EMGFA is responsible for planning, directing and controlling the use of the Armed Forces in the fulfilment of their operational missions and tasks, in accordance with the Constitution and the law.
