Within the framework of its specific capabilities and in accordance with the public interest it is responsible for safeguarding, the Portuguese Army is responsible for: Participate in the military defence of the Republic; Ensure the generation, preparation and sustainment of forces and means of the land component of the Force System; Participate in international missions within the framework of International Organisations; Participate in missions outside the National Territory, in an autonomous or multinational framework; Carry out technical-military cooperation actions; Cooperate, under the terms of the law, with the Security Forces and Services; Collaborate in civil protection missions; Collaborate in tasks related to the satisfaction of basic needs and the improvement of the quality of life of the populations; Perform activities in the field of culture, namely the preservation and dissemination of its heritage.
