Instituto Universitário Militar

The Military University Institute (IUM) is a military university higher education institution, directly dependent on the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces, which includes the following autonomous university organic units: The Naval School (EN), which reports hierarchically to the Chief of Staff of the Navy; The Military Academy (AM), which reports hierarchically to the Chief of Staff of the Army; The Air Force Academy (AFA), which reports hierarchically to the Chief of Staff of the Air Force; IUM also includes the Department of Postgraduate Studies (DEPG) and the IUM Research and Development Centre (CIDIUM). The IUM also includes the Military Polytechnic Unit (UPM), which reports hierarchically to the IUM Commander, as an autonomous polytechnic organic unit made up of: the Navy Polytechnic Department; the Army Polytechnic Department; the Air Force Polytechnic Department; and the National Republican Guard Polytechnic Department. The IUM carries out teaching, research, community support, cooperation and exchange activities, with the aim of training officers and non-commissioned officers from the permanent ranks of the Armed Forces (FFAA) and the National Republican Guard (GNR), enabling them to carry out the duties assigned to them by statute, conferring the appropriate competences for their performance and promoting individual development for the exercise of command, direction, leadership and staff functions.
